THE THINKING BEHIND THE ANSWER

How this calculation works

You choose the materials and proportions. The example is not a species-specific bonsai, terrarium or animal-care recommendation. Rock, roots, drainage layers and container shape affect measured fill volume. This scales volumes only; it does not infer irrigation, fertilizer, pesticide or stocking instructions.

Total mix = fill volume × (1 + allowance). Each component volume = total mix × its share; shares must total 100%.

Your calculation, step by step

  1. Measure the actual volume to fill.
  2. Add the entered allowance.
  3. Scale each chosen material by its share.
A worked example

12 litres with a 10% allowance gives 13.2 L total. A 50/25/25 mix needs 6.6 L, 3.3 L and 3.3 L.
