THE THINKING BEHIND THE ANSWER

How this calculation works

For a meaningful comparison, include all relevant costs and use the same time period. This simple ROI is not annualized and ignores the timing of cash flows. For an advertising campaign, revenue divided by ad spend is ROAS, a different measure.

ROI = (return − cost) ÷ cost × 100.

Your calculation, step by step

  1. Return minus cost = 1,500 − 1,000 = 500.
  2. Divide by cost and multiply by 100: 50%.
A worked example

A 1,500 return on 1,000 of total costs gives 500 profit and 50% ROI.
