THE THINKING BEHIND THE ANSWER

How this calculation works

Enter whole-pixel dimensions. The simplified ratio uses the greatest common divisor. The exact scaled height may be fractional; the suggested pixel height is rounded to the nearest pixel and can introduce a very small proportion difference.

Simplified ratio = width/GCD : height/GCD. New height = new width × original height ÷ original width.

Your calculation, step by step

  1. The greatest common divisor of 1920 and 1080 is 120.
  2. Divide both dimensions by 120 to get 16:9.
  3. Scale height by 1280 ÷ 1920; round to the nearest pixel, with a minimum height of 1 pixel.
A worked example

1,920 × 1,080 simplifies to 16:9. At 1,280 pixels wide, its matching height is 720 pixels.
