THE THINKING BEHIND THE ANSWER

How this calculation works

The entered bill is the amount on which you want to tip. Tip and bill are rounded to two decimal places. When the total cannot split evenly to the cent, the payment-split note assigns the remaining cents so the payments add up exactly. Currencies without two decimal places may need a different rounding convention.

Tip = bill × tip rate ÷ 100. Share = (bill + rounded tip) ÷ number of people.

Your calculation, step by step

  1. Round the bill to 85.00 and the tip to 15.30 using decimal half-up rounding.
  2. Split the 100.30 total between 2 people.
  3. To pay exactly: 2 × 50.15.
A worked example

An 85.00 bill with an 18% tip totals 100.30, or 50.15 each for two people.
