THE THINKING BEHIND THE ANSWER

How this calculation works

Use a load test for the actual game, mods, tick rate, website or workload. Player counts and requests per second are different units and cannot be mixed. The arithmetic does not infer CPU, memory, latency, autoscaling, failure domains, storage, egress, support or a provider service guarantee. Reserve capacity must actually be deployable to help during a failure.

Working servers = ceiling(peak load × (1 + headroom) / measured safe capacity). Provisioned servers = working servers + reserves.

Your calculation, step by step

  1. Apply headroom to the peak load in its original unit.
  2. Round working capacity up using measured safe capacity.
  3. Add the selected reserves and their cost.
A worked example

120 simultaneous players, 25% headroom and 40 tested players per server require 4 working servers; one reserve makes 5. At 30/month each, that is 150/month.
