THE THINKING BEHIND THE ANSWER

How this calculation works

Markup is profit as a percentage of cost. A 25% markup yields a 20% margin because margin uses selling price as its denominator.

Selling price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100)

Your calculation, step by step

  1. Markup amount = 80 × 25% = 20.
  2. Selling price = 80 + 20 = 100.
A worked example

An 80 cost with a 25% markup gives a 100 selling price.
