Currency conversion

Compare currency conversions using the rate you will actually receive

A headline exchange rate and the amount received are different pieces of information. A useful comparison starts with an explicit rate direction, the provider’s fees, and the quote’s date or expiry.

Write down the rate direction

A rate of 0.90 EUR per USD means 100 USD converts to 90 EUR before fees. That is an editable arithmetic example, not a market quote. Reversing the direction requires the reciprocal rate; reusing 0.90 for EUR to USD would be a different calculation.

The currency converter multiplies an amount by the rate you enter and rounds once, half up, to your chosen decimal places. It does not fetch a bank quote or infer a rate from the currency names. Entering the same source and destination currency requires a rate of one.

Compare the total outcome on the same basis

Check whether a fee is deducted from the source amount or the destination amount, and whether the spread is already included in the offered rate. Apply the actual sequence in a separate inspected formula when necessary. Avoid subtracting a fee twice.

Compare offers for the same amount, currencies, settlement method, and time. A reference rate can be useful context, but it is not a guarantee that a provider will execute at that rate. The ECB describes its reference rates as informational and discourages their use for transaction purposes.

Keep evidence with an important decision

Record the provider, rate direction, quote time, fees, and final amount. A saved calculator snapshot preserves your arithmetic inputs, not proof of a provider’s offer. Keep the quote or statement separately.

Currency conversion does not determine taxable gains, reporting exchange rates, or filing obligations. Those can depend on jurisdiction and transaction dates. Use an applicable official rule or qualified adviser rather than substituting a generic converter result.
