Workflow comparison

Calculator, spreadsheet, or custom formula: choose a workflow you can check

A quick answer and a recurring business process have different needs. Choose by the work you need to repeat, the records you need to retain, and the amount of logic you can independently check.

Use a fixed calculator for a familiar calculation

A catalog tool gives you named fields, a stated formula, and a worked example. It suits a bounded task such as comparing margin and markup or converting a length. The formula stays consistent while you change inputs. Check assumptions such as units, timing, and rounding before using the result in a quote.

A canvas groups related tools without turning them into an invisible chain of dependencies. Each widget calculates from its own explicit inputs. Saving a snapshot preserves the inputs and result for later comparison. Your local workspace is specific to this browser; export a backup when the record matters.

Use a spreadsheet when the table is part of the problem

A row-by-row model can be appropriate for many products, variable periods, reconciliations, and custom reports. Its flexibility also creates review work: references, copied formulas, hidden assumptions, and inconsistent units need attention. Keep a known-answer example and a clear change history alongside the model.

A purpose-built calculator does not replace a ledger or an accounting system. If you need a general table, use a table. If you need an inspectable answer to a repeated question, a focused calculator may remove unnecessary setup. Compare the full workflow, including maintenance and export, rather than the number of available functions.

Use a custom calculator when your formula is stable

The builder supports bounded UCALC/1 arithmetic with named inputs and declared units. Start with an explicit formula or a supported description. Inspect the entire expression, set bounds, and add an expected answer you checked independently. A structurally valid draft is not automatically correct for your business meaning.

Keep exports of important definitions. Recheck a formula after changing its meaning, units, bounds, or rounding. Cloud collaboration and paid retention need an activated account service; local tools and exports work without an account.
