THE THINKING BEHIND THE ANSWER

How this calculation works

Use population statistics for the entire group you are describing, or sample statistics when your data estimates a larger population. Sample variance requires at least two values.

Mean = Σx/n; population variance = Σ(x − mean)²/n

Your calculation, step by step

  1. Count = 6; sum = 110.
  2. Mean = 110 ÷ 6 = 18.333333.
  3. Population variance divides squared deviations by n (6).
A worked example

The mean of 12, 15, 18, 18, 22, 25 is 18.333333.
