THE THINKING BEHIND THE ANSWER

How this calculation works

Divide both terms by their greatest common divisor. The decimal ratio is the first value divided by the second.

Simplified ratio = (a ÷ gcd(a,b)) : (b ÷ gcd(a,b))

Your calculation, step by step

  1. Greatest common divisor of 4 and 6 = 2
  2. Divide both sides by 2.
A worked example

4 : 6 simplifies to 2 : 3.
