THE THINKING BEHIND THE ANSWER

How this calculation works

The discriminant determines whether the equation has two real roots, one repeated real root, or a complex conjugate pair. The leading coefficient must be nonzero.

x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) ÷ (2a)

Your calculation, step by step

  1. Discriminant = -5² − 4 × 1 × 6 = 1
  2. Roots: 2 and 3.
A worked example

x² − 5x + 6 = 0 has roots 2 and 3.
